Hallux Rigidus (big toe joint arthritis)
What is hallux rigidus?
Hallux rigidus is wear and tear osteoarthritis of the big toe joint and is the second most common condition to hallux valgus (bunion deformity). Over 50% of the over 60s suffer with osteoarthritis of one joint or more but people of any age can suffer with it. The condition is progressive with wear of the cartilage, bone lipping around the joint and increasing stiffness and pain being the common features.
Treatment
We can offer treatment for early to late stage hallux rigidus depending on how severe and progressed the condition is. Treatment options range from joint manipulation and injection therapy under x-ray guidence; to joint reconstructive procedures some examples being joint implants and fusions with specialist techniques to shorten recovery times. Surgery can be provided as a day-case procedure under local anaesthetic with a high success rate.
